강릉 사진: 허난설헌 & 허균 Birthplace & Museum

Posted by 비회원 강릉 : 2007/06/20 02:20
Before it starts raining, I thought I'd take advantage of the fine weather and take some pictures.

The first set of pictures is of Heonanseolheon's birthplace (허난설헌 생가) in Chodang-dong. I don't know much about Heonanseolheon, other than that she was a Chosun dynasty poet who lived from 1563 to 1589. The house itself is small compared to birthplaces of emperors and other famous people, but I think that's part of the attraction - one can imagine people actually having lived there. And like many traditional Korean architecture, it's built like a squarish maze with connecting doorways leading to separate quarters. The best part of the whole place is perhaps the forest behind the house, which has some of the tallest pine trees I've seen in Gangneung. On most days it's quiet and peaceful there, probably because they haven't turned it into a domesticated park. I hope they keep it that way.

Near the house, the city of Gangneung recently finished building a museum in honor of Heonanseolheon and her brother Heogyun (허균), who wrote the Korean Robin Hood story Hong Gil-dong (홍길동). Again, the museum is not very big, but they have some old books that seem like first editions and some grass surrounding the museum, which is always a welcome.
