While President Roh is slated to visit North Korea later this month, the Korean 국가기록원 has acquired some rare video footage of Pyongyang dating from 1945 to 1953 and released them under the title 해방 8년사. One of the videos is embedded below. You can see all three videos at 한겨레.

행정자치부 산하 국가기록원에서는 9일 러시아국립영상사진문서보관소와 미국 내셔널아카이브스 등에서 입수한 해방이후 한국전쟁까지 북한의 ‘해방 8년사’에 관한 필름을 공개했다. 또 기록원에서는 해방부터 1946년까지 역사적 사건들을 기록한 <해방조선을 가다>를 발굴 공개했다.

행자부 신관 3층 국제회의장에서 공개한 ‘해방 8년사’ 영상은, 영상으로 본 평양의 정치, 평양사람들의 일상생활, 평양시의 변화상 등 세 부문으로 나누어 편집된 것이었다.

Because travel is so restricted, North Korea is no doubt the most mysterious country in the world. It's not easy to visit North Korea to see things with your own eyes, but there are many web videos of modern-day North Korea accessible to everyone. There's even a movie being made about an American defector Joe Dresnok who has chosen to live in North Korea the rest of his life. But because North Korea is such a strange and surreal place, maybe a fictional portrait is just as relevant.
