Posted by 편집부 문학 : 2009/03/17 10:22

If you are majored in English language and literature, you should read this "GREAT" Charles Dickens book ---- Great Expectations. It's totally not handy- Just so thick and heavy.

Charles John Huffam Dickens is the one of writers in 19 centuries. He had studied in private school for few years but after his father went jail for debt--he was just 12--he worked at a factory for 10hours per day. However, his writing is very richly and poetic. In his book, he had a satire on a society of Britain in 19 centuries.

The story begins with the child life of 'Pip'. Pip had lived with his elder sister and her husband-who is blacksmith in a small poor town. One day he met a prisonship-breaker on a hill. The man asked Pip to have some food and Pip stole some food from his sister's house and gave them to Breaker. Few days later, Pip saw the breaker caught by soldiers and went back to the prisonship. When Pip thought his poor would be continued, he got the great expectations from John Doe. When he became rich, he went to London and had expensive gentlemen education. After that he was inflated with pride and just riot away with his money. He became a bluffy and depravity man who lost all his kind mind like a child. When he noticed that John Doe is the prisonship-breaker that he met on a hill in a small poor town, his expectation which is 'Great Expectation- was gone. He realized that his nature is not belong to rich gentleman. Then he regreted all of his depressed life in London.

It took about 2 weeks to read this book. I have read many classic novels since I entered a university, however the 'Great Expectation' is the most interesting book I have ever read.
I recommened this book to all majoring English literature student!
