The Histories by Herodotus

It might seem strange to be introducing a book of history written by a Greek but this is one of my favourite books ever.  (The other is Meditations by Marcus Aurelius -- a book of philosophy written in Greek by a Roman).  The author is Herodotus, called by many "The Father of History".  He was the first person who tried to write objectively about the past.  The main subject of this book is the war between the Hellenes (i.e. the Greeks) and the Persians.  If you have seen the film 300 then you know something about this war.  In fact, the story of 300 Spartans fighting the massive Persian army comes from The Histories.  Besides the story of this war, Herodotus also describes many lands of Asia, Europe, and Africa.  He spends an especially long time describing the customs and culture of the Egyptians.  If you like interesting stories then you will love this book.
Let me introduce one story that might be of especial interest to people who learn languages.  The Egyptians once believed that they were the oldest civilisation in the world.  King Psammetichos of Egypt wanted to find out for sure which people were the earliest in the world.  He asked many people but couldn't get a good answer.  So, he thought of an experiment.  He chose two newborn babies and gave them to a shepherd to raise.  Nobody was allowed to speak to the children and they were not allowed to hear any human voices.  One day, after a couple of years, the shepherd went into his house.  The children ran towards him with outstretched hands and said, "bekos."  The children said this several times.  The shepherd did not know what this word meant so he brought the children to King Psammetichos.  The king found out that the word "bekos" means 'bread' in the Phrygian language.  Therefore, the king said that the Phrygian people are the earliest people in the world.  This is probably not true but it is an extremely interesting story.  There are many such stories in The Histories.
The picture I have attached is of the Landmark edition of The Histories.  I bought this a few months ago.  Why is it good?  Well, there are many photographs, maps, and notes to help the reader understand the stories and history.  It was somewhat expensive (VERY expensive in Korea but I ordered from Canada) but it is a book that I will probably read now and then for my whole life.  If you think the English will be too difficult for you then you can go to the library and try to find a Korean copy.
